Since way back in the early 1930s, Canada had been playing international rugby – their debut being against Japan in 1932. Furthermore, since the staging of the first World Cup in 1987, Canada has made every WC event, and in fact is the only North American team to claim this honor.

In North America, Canada clearly dominates in rugby in the region, and by and large is considered second only to Argentina in the Americas. The International Rugby Board currently ranks Canada fourteenth in world standing.

In terms of World Cup results, Canada’s biggest claim to fame thus far has to be in 1991, where they reached the quarter-finals.

Here’s a snapshot of Canadian rugby’s highlights:

During the 1993 World Cup, Canada famously beat Wales 26-24 at Cardiff Arms Park; then beat out France 18-16 in 1994 at Twin Elms Rugby Park in Ontario. Subsequently, Canada fought to a 27-27 draw against Ireland in 2000 at Markham, Ontario. In 2002, they claimed a 26-23 win against Scotland in Vancouver, British Columbia, which became the start of a winning streak of seven straight victories.

In July of 2009, Canada beat the US in a two-pronged playoff game thus qualifying for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, which will take place in New Zealand.
